Charges & Magnetism

The most interesting and fun thing we did while learning about charges was seeing how we could easily cause normally non-magnetic objects to attract or repel each other. It started with Spetz showing us his nifty box with the two leafs of metal hanging inside and then touching the top after building up a static charge. We were all amazed to see the two leafs bend away from each other. We played around with the box for a while before Spetz showed us we didn't need a fancy device to demonstrate this effect. All we needed was some tape. He then showed us how simply laying two strips of tape next to each other on the table and then removing them quickly they would both gain a mild static charge and repel each other when brought close. The opposite effect could be achieved by placing one strip on top of the other and then separating them quickly.
